What you can specify
- Length and width — up to 120 x 74 inches, in whole inches plus a fraction down to 1/16 of an inch
- Glass — clear, gray, bronze, opaque or HDglass
- Thickness — from 1/8 inch to 3/4 inch, depending on size
- Edge finish — flat polish, pencil polish, beveled or seamed
- Corners — eased, square, clipped or rounded, set individually
- Temper mark — with or without the tempering stamp
- Drilled holes — or none
Sizing and cutting tolerance
We cut rectangular tops from 8 inches up to 120 x 74 inches. You can specify length and width down to 1/16 of an inch, and every piece is cut to within 1/8 of an inch of the size you give us.
That precision matters most when you are replacing a top that has to drop into a recess, where a piece cut fractionally over will wedge rather than seat.
How to measure a rectangular table top
Measure the length and the width, each at both ends — furniture frames are often slightly wider at one end than the other. Then measure both diagonals to check the frame is square. Where measurements differ, order to the smaller figure in each direction.
If you are replacing a broken top, measure the old glass rather than the frame wherever enough of it survives to measure accurately. If it does not, measure the frame and tell us that is what you have done.
For a top that sits inside a recess, measure the opening itself, and allow for the piece to drop in cleanly rather than wedge.
Corners
Long rectangular tops put their corners exactly where people walk past them. Every corner is eased as standard, so the sharp point is already taken off — and you can go further on the corners that need it.
Eased — the standard finish. The point is removed.
None — a true square corner, left as cut.
Clipped — the corner is cut off at an angle, giving a flat chamfer.
Rounded — the corner is cut to a curve.
Each of the four corners is set independently, so a top that runs past a doorway can be rounded on the two exposed corners and left square where it meets the wall. They are labelled A to D on the diagram in the customizer.
Choosing your glass
Thickness. From 1/8 inch up to 3/4 inch, with the options available depending on the size of the piece. Which you need depends mostly on how the glass will be supported.
If the top will sit on an existing surface — protecting a wooden table, a desk or a dresser — 1/4 inch is the usual choice, and the most common thickness we cut.
If the top will sit on legs or a frame, with areas of glass unsupported underneath, thicker glass is generally more appropriate: 3/8 inch or 1/2 inch.
The load a glass top can support depends on its dimensions, thickness, support arrangement and intended use. Thickness alone does not establish a safe load rating.
Thickness is also an aesthetic choice — a thicker edge reads as more substantial — but it adds significantly to both weight and price. Check the weight of your exact configuration in our glass weight calculator before you order.
If you have a specific weight-bearing requirement, check with our glass specialists before purchasing.
Glass type. Clear glass has high clarity with a minimal greenish tint. Gray and bronze are tinted. Opaque obscures what is beneath it. HDglass is our low-iron glass — clearer, with less of the greenish tint.
Edge work. Flat polish gives a smooth, shiny edge with a minimal look. Pencil polish has a rounded profile. Beveled cuts an angled facet around the perimeter for a decorative finish. Seamed is a basic ground finish rather than a decorative polish. Check the options and price available for your configuration, and ask our glass specialists which finish suits your installation.
With or without the tempering stamp
A tempering stamp identifies glass as tempered. Whether a permanent mark is required depends on the application and applicable requirements. If you are unsure which option to select, check with our glass specialists before purchasing.
Where available for your configuration and appropriate for your application, you can choose glass with or without the tempering stamp.
Where a rectangular glass top works
Console and hall tables, desks and writing tables, sideboards and dressers, shelf and cabinet inserts, coffee tables, and protective tops over timber furniture.
How your top is made
Each piece is made to the measurements and options you select, within the stated cutting tolerance. When tempered glass is selected, cutting, edge work and any approved holes are completed before heat treatment. Tempered glass cannot be cut or drilled afterwards, so confirm all dimensions and features before ordering.
Tempering changes the glass’s strength and breakage behaviour, but glass can still break and cause injury. Choose a configuration and support arrangement appropriate for the intended use.
